Liverpool are set to announce a new contract for Virgil van Dijk after finalising a deal for the defender.

The Dutch international’s future was up in the air as he entered the final months of his current contract with the club, sparking rumours of a potential exit.

As recently as last month Van Dijk admitted he had “no idea” if he would still be a Red next season. “At the moment I don’t even know what will happen next year,” he said.

“If anyone says they do know, they are lying to your face. Everyone knows there are some conversations behind the scenes but that is about it.”

However, it now appears the 33-year-old will remain at Anfield after Fabrizio Romano revealed on Friday that he has agreed a two-year contract extension with Liverpool.

The transfer reporter followed up with an update on Saturday, claiming that the only thing left for the club to do is make an official statement after all the details were agreed and documents signed off by lawyers.

Van Dijk has been an integral part of Liverpool’s title challenge this season having started all 31 league games for the Premier League leaders.

He leads the Premier League for touches and passes into the final third this season and ranks among the division’s top performers for aerial duels won (2nd), interceptions (5th) and clearances (7th).

Van Dijk’s new deal comes hot on the heels of Mo Salah extending his time at Liverpool for another two years. The Egyptian winger’s contract was also due to expire in the summer, but the club have now secured the futures of two of their top stars.

However, it increasingly looks like Trent Alexander-Arnold will leave the Merseyside outfit on a free transfer to Real Madrid.
