Virgil van Dijk said he wants Andy Robertson to remain at Liverpool after the 3-2 Premier League defeat against Bournemouth.

Liverpool captain shared his thoughts on teammate Andy Robertson’s future while also accepting responsibility following the club’s disappointing 3-2 loss to Bournemouth in the Premier League.

The defeat came in matchweek 22 and added pressure on the Reds during difficult period in the season.

Robertson featured in second half of the match coming on as substitute for Milos Kerkez.

Robertson linked with winter exit

Reports suggested that Robertson could leave Liverpool during the current winter transfer window, with Tottenham said to be interested in signing the 31 year-old Scotland international.

Van Dijk addressed the situation in comments reported by Anfield Sector explaining that he speaks with Robertson daily and values him greatly within the squad.

“He is our vice captain and very important player” Van Dijk said. “I want him to stay but whatever happens, we will have to wait and see”

Van Dijk focuses on team issues

The Dutch defender also spoke about Liverpool’s struggles this season pointing to fatigue and defensive exposure as key problems.

He explained that Bournemouth created chances because Liverpool were too open at times especially when wrong decisions were made in possession leading to dangerous counter attacks.

Van Dijk added that consistency remains the main focus, rather than worrying about the top four race.

“I take full responsibility”

Van Dijk was honest about his own performance saying he felt fully responsible for Bournemouth’s first goal.

“It was difficult ball to judge but I take full responsibility” he said.

He also noted that while second goal could have been avoided by better defending conceding such goals means the team must work harder moving forward.

The captain stressed that setbacks are part of football even in strong seasons and said the squad must recover quickly ahead of their next match.
