Van Dijk full of praise for Liverpool star after Real Madrid victory | OneFootball

Virgil van Dijk hailed Dominik Szoboszlai’s recent form after Liverpool beat Real Madrid 1-0 in the Champions League.

The Reds had only won one of their previous six matches before they beat Aston Villa on Saturday but a goal from Alexis Mac Allister against the Spanish side means Liverpool now have won their last two in all competitions.

Szoboszlai has started every match for the Reds in the Premier League and Champions League this season and van Dijk hailed the midfielder’s impact.

“I think what you see is what you get,” the Dutchman said. “I think Dom is very important,the energy he brings on the pitch is incredible, the quality that he has is obviously outstanding, and I think he’s learning each and every game.

“He’s developing into the player that we all feel like he could be, he’s already showing it obviously for the country as well.

“He’s playing well and it’s about continuing to do it for the rest of the season. So far he has had a great start to the season, and it’s about keeping going, keeping your head down and performing well.”

Liverpool now face a very tough test up against Manchester City on the weekend, and after facing Kylian Mbappe already, van Dijk has an equally tough test in trying to shut out Erling Haaland.

“[The match against City] will be similar to tonight a little bit,” he said. “I think we faced Real Madrid as a team as well they have a striker who was in form as well, so we have to be spot on [to stop Haaland].

“I think today we showed that we were good as a team defensively, created good opportunities, they had a goalkeeper that saved them a couple of times.”
