Vasco have lodged an appeal to lift a court-ordered suspension and are seeking an urgent ruling to host Boca Juniors at the Maracanã in the Copa Sudamericana semi-final on 20 October.
According to Globo.com, the club’s initial action to take the match to the stadium was halted because a parallel popular action filed by a Vasco supporter was already under way, with judge Adriana Laia Franco of the 2nd Civil Court warning that concurrent decisions could create legal uncertainty.
In Friday’s filing, Vasco argue the two cases are independent and request urgent relief from the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice, TJ-RJ. A venue must be confirmed by Monday.
Earlier on Friday, the Fla-Flu consortium that runs the Maracanã opposed staging Vasco v Boca at the ground, and Flamengo and Fluminense submitted an appeal setting out their arguments.
Their central concern was the pitch, stating that adding the semi-final would leave the Maracanã hosting three matches in five days, below the minimum recovery time.
The filing also says a concessionaire analysis found the stadium unable to stage new sporting events in 2026, which they add has already blocked Flamengo’s 45-year world title celebration game and Zico’s annual Jogo das Estrelas in December. Hours later, the Vasco fan behind the popular action challenged that stance, citing alleged contradictions and pointing to 2026 examples of nine matches in quick succession.
