According to Globo.com, Renato Gaúcho is close to becoming Vasco's new head coach after the club improved its offer, with negotiations stretching into the early hours of Tuesday.

After two rejections from the 63-year-old, the Rio side returned with a proposal nearer his terms. Following Sunday’s Campeonato Carioca semi-final loss to Fluminense, he showed openness to the project, though pay remained a sticking point.

The latest offer still sat 10% to 20% below the salary he requested.

Even so, the board kept pushing, judging that alternative candidates available at similar costs did not offer better value.

Renato has sought wages close to what he earned at Fluminense, the club he left in September 2025. His name entered Vasco’s plans last week, hours after Fernando Diniz was dismissed, but an approach was delayed amid interest in Artur Jorge.

As attempts to prise the Portuguese from Al-Rayyan in Qatar faltered, Renato returned as the more realistic option. If a deal is confirmed, it would mark his third spell at São Januário, following stints in 2005, 2006 and 2008.
