According to Podcast Cruzmaltino, Vasco da Gama moved immediately after confirming Fernando Diniz’s dismissal, seeking a high-profile head coach and aiming to announce swiftly to restart training.
Late-night meetings at São Januário on Sunday set the first targets and defined a clear profile, a proven coach able to build attacking teams and repair the defence.
Marcelo Gallardo emerged as the standout candidate, viewed internally as the ideal figure to take charge and lift the team’s level. Acceptance of his name is strong among football executives.
Any practical move depends on events scheduled for Monday. Gallardo has a decisive meeting with River Plate in Argentina to determine his future, and Vasco will wait for that outcome before making a formal offer.
Born in Merlo, Buenos Aires province, Gallardo enjoyed eight straight seasons in charge of River Plate, winning 14 official trophies. His honours include two Copa Libertadores titles, in 2015 and 2018, plus the Copa Sudamericana and Recopa Sudamericana.
He began coaching at Nacional in Uruguay, winning the league in his first year. He also had a short spell with Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, leaving in the first half of the year.
On returning to River, he has not matched earlier success and has faced questions during a poor run this season. A move to Vasco could provide the fresh start he appears to need.
