Vasco have made an initial approach and opened talks to appoint Renato Gaúcho after dismissing Fernando Diniz on Sunday, according to Globo.com.
The club contacted the coach’s representatives on Monday to check his availability. There is no formal offer on the table. Out of work since 24 September 2025 after resigning from Fluminense, Renato is in Rio de Janeiro, which could help accelerate discussions.
Renato’s camp has given a positive response to the outreach. The board intend to assess all available options before lodging an offer, but they are moving quickly. Other candidates were sounded out the same day, though Renato is currently ahead to take the job.
Club chiefs met soon after Diniz’s exit to define the desired profile, and talks continued through Monday. They want a coach who can enhance the positive elements of Diniz’s work and manage the group effectively.
With a turbulent start to the Campeonato Brasileiro, there is an acceptance that the margin for error is minimal in this decision. The current hierarchy attempted to hire Renato in December 2024, but he turned it down. There is now an expectation he could accept a return to the club.
