Vasco are pursuing Sparta Prague winger John Mercado as they look to strengthen their forward line.

According to Globo.com, the club have lodged an opening offer of about seven million euros, roughly R$ 42.3 million at current rates, and have signalled a second bid that has not yet been formalised. Sparta have not engaged in talks so far and are unwilling to negotiate.

Vasco’s push continues because Mercado has indicated in direct conversations with sporting director Admar Lopes that he wants the move. Lopes prioritises targets who are keen to wear the shirt.

An added factor is Sparta’s exit from Champions League qualifying at Lyon last Tuesday. Out of Europe’s main competition, Vasco hope the Czech club could become more flexible.

This week, Lopes will resume direct talks with Sparta. If they receive a green light, further discussions on payment structure will follow.

The 24-year-old Ecuadorian operates mainly on the right. He made his professional debut for Athletico Paranaense in 2022, then featured for CSA, Vilafranquense and AFS before joining Sparta Prague. This season he has two goals in five games.
