Vasco drew with Chapecoense in the second round of the Brasileirão. According to Globo.com, Léo Jardim, Brenner and Fernando Diniz were judged the worst performers in a bitter night at São Januário.
Thiago Mendes made an early mistake around 10 minutes that led to the visitors’ only first-half effort, then grew into the game as the main creator. Philippe Coutinho twice squandered clear chances and slipped Brenner through one on one, but the striker shot at the keeper. A Brenner strike was also ruled out after the referee penalised Nuno Moreira for a foul on the goalkeeper.
After the break, Puma Rodríguez put Vasco ahead from an Andrés Gómez cross. He then conceded an unnecessary foul and, from the resulting free-kick, Chapecoense levelled with a saveable shot that beat Léo Jardim. The goalkeeper was booed.
Brenner missed four clear chances and was later replaced by David, whose simple misplaced pass preceded the throw-in that started the move for the equaliser. Coutinho registered 10 shots and created the best first-half opening for Brenner. Andrés Gómez was Vasco’s most direct outlet and supplied the assist.
Barros helped build from deep and released David with a long pass that almost produced a goal. The full-backs offered thrust, Lucas Piton improved and Robert Renan was solid alongside Carlos Cuesta. Diniz’s changes did not rebalance the side and the coach faced insults at full-time, with São Januário still not the ally he needs.
