Vasco have begun their post-Fernando Diniz search, holding meetings and contacting candidates, with a quick decision targeted before the Fluminense tie.

According to Globo.com, executives met on Sunday minutes after Pedrinho announced Diniz’s dismissal, reconvening on Monday to refine the profile and shortlist.

The new coach should value attacking play to suit a naturally offensive squad, but must improve the defensive structure. The board also want a strong man-manager to jolt the group in the short term and shield it from recent external pressure.

Preference is for out-of-work candidates to avoid club-to-club negotiations and accelerate talks. Pedrinho aims to choose a name by Sunday for the Carioca semi-final second leg against Fluminense, though the newcomer might not take the team in the clássico.

Football director Admar Lopes spent Monday mapping the market, making initial contacts and speaking to representatives of approved names. Renato Gaúcho was approached and responded positively about returning to work, but there is no formal offer.

Before tabling any proposal, the hierarchy will continue sounding out options and weighing the finances. Renato is considered ahead because he lives in Rio de Janeiro, knows the Brazilian game and replied positively.

Permanent assistant Bruno Lazaroni will lead Vasco at Santos on Thursday in the Campeonato Brasileiro at Vila Belmiro.
