Vasco have begun an overhaul at left-back, agreeing this week the signings of Cuiabano and Paulinho to compete with Lucas Piton and Victor Luís. According to Globo.com, Cuiabano joins from Nottingham Forest and Paulinho arrives from América-MG.
Cuiabano arrived in Rio on Thursday. The left-back will join on loan from Nottingham Forest until the end of the year, having been limited to under-21 outings in England.
Club figures view him as having the potential to start for Vasco in 2026, believing he can add physicality to the first team. Recent performances by Lucas Piton have dissatisfied staff, and Puma Rodríguez even had a run there in an improvised role.
Paulinho’s move follows a different plan. The 21-year-old will sign a pre-contract and is due to arrive at São Januário at no cost mid-year, seen as depth with no ready-made academy left-backs.
At 1.83m, he is taller than rivals for the position and even the centre-backs, except Robert Renan. He is regarded as a more balanced defender rather than purely attacking, offering a different profile for certain games.
The arrivals point to a likely exit for Victor Luís by mid-season. The 32-year-old is not in the coaching staff’s plans and has slipped behind João Victor Mutano, a forward by trade who has been used at left-back.
