Vasco starts renewal talks, weighs up buying four loanees

Vasco began planning for next season immediately after closing the transfer window with six signings for Pedro Emanuel’s squad. With incoming moves now wrapped up, executive director Admar Lopes is focusing the board’s efforts on two key fronts: renewing the contracts of academy products and experienced starters, as well as carrying out a detailed budget review to make permanent deals for players currently on loan until December.

The first concrete step in retaining assets was a verbal agreement to extend defensive midfielder Ramon Rique’s contract through the end of 2030. The 18-year-old midfielder, whose deal had run until September 2029, earned significant minutes in recent rounds, received a salary increase, and established himself as one of the biggest gems produced by Vasco’s academy. At the same time, the board submitted a formal renewal proposal to Jair, seeking a new financial agreement after the player’s automatic extension was affected by a muscle injury suffered last month.

Purchase options and planning at Vasco

In addition to the renewals in the middle of the pitch, Vasco has started analyzing the set fees to sign permanently the four players who are on loan until the end of the year. The list includes left-back Cuiabano, valued at 10 million euros (R$ 58.8 million), defender Robert Renan, priced at 8 million euros (R$ 47 million), center-back Carlos Cuesta, set at 5.75 million euros (R$ 33.8 million), and forward Johan Rojas, with a purchase option of 3.5 million dollars (R$ 17.9 million).

During a press conference, Admar Lopes detailed the Rio club’s strategy for studying the feasibility of the transfers before opening talks with the teams that hold the players’ rights:

“We are very pleased with all of them. Obviously, there are players who are in better form at the moment, and others who have not been playing as much, as is the case with Rojas. From a sporting point of view, we are very pleased. A purchase involves a financial effort. Although all the payment deadlines and all the options are already in the contract and provided for, in the coming weeks we will make a financial projection for 2027 and try to understand what our budget is and what type of signings we can activate.”

Priority for Robert Renan and finances

Among the names under evaluation, Vasco’s management has defined Robert Renan as the absolute priority to remain permanently at São Januário. The 22-year-old has taken on the role of a technical and mental leader in the team’s back line and is considered an irreplaceable piece by the coaching staff to give the side stability in the decisive stages of cup competitions and in the coming seasons.

The executive stressed that the coaching staff approves of the performances of all the loanees, but made a point of tying investments to cash-flow limits:

“Robert, Cuesta, Cuiabano, and Rojas, who has played a little less, are all players we like a lot technically, and we would like to count on them for the future, obviously depending on financial limitations.”

The management of the Giant of the Hill is working on building the 2027 budget while counting on the arrival of the new SAF investor to make the permanent signings possible and keep the backbone of the squad intact.
