Vasco appointed Renato Gaúcho exactly 10 days after confirming Fernando Diniz’s dismissal. The board had prioritised hiring a new coach, placing other matters on hold. With that resolved, attention has returned to strengthening the squad.

According to PaponaColina, the international transfer window closed on Tuesday, shifting the search to the domestic market. Brazilian rules allow registration of players who featured in the state championships until 27 March.

Even before the previous staff left, the club were pursuing a holding midfielder. Coutinho’s departure has increased the need and added a creative midfielder to the list.

The hierarchy plan to consult the new boss on potential targets within this window. Internally, the view is that his main task is to revive the technical and physical levels of the current group, which they believe can perform better.

Major outlay is ruled out for now and should wait until the mid-year window. The focus is strictly on market opportunities, loans or players nearing the end of contracts. Another big-money move for an immediate starter is seen as unlikely after heavy spending earlier in the year.

Since December there have been 16 departures, cutting costs and freeing salary headroom. Six signings have arrived across the pitch, Brenner, Hinestroza, Saldivia, Spinelli, Cuiabano and Johan Rojas.

Vasco also spent to keep players already at São Januário. They paid 1.5 million euros to Galatasaray to extend defender Cuesta’s loan to year-end, and exercised the option to buy Andrés Gómez, paying slightly over 4.5 million euros for 60% of his rights.
