Fernando Diniz will rotate Vasco’s squad and pick a mixed side against Madureira at 20:00 on Monday at São Januário in the fifth round of the Campeonato Carioca. It should be the last chance to blend starters and reserves.
According to Globo.com, with the Brasileirão running during the State competition, Vasco’s final group fixture in the Carioca is against Botafogo before the knockouts begin. It is likely Madureira will be the last outing for a reserve-heavy side.
That makes this game a golden opportunity for those still pushing to impress and secure minutes.
João Vitor, a forward by trade, has risen from under-20 back-up to deliver promising cameos at left-back. With Lucas Piton out of form, he is featuring more often, offering threat in the final third.
JP has returned from a loan at Avaí and has the board’s confidence early in the season. A holding midfielder by origin, he has trained as an advanced number 10 and is likely to start against Madureira.
Andrey Fernandes, one of the academy’s brightest prospects, came on well against Mirassol and had two dangerous efforts late. He has worked with the first team since the end of the Copinha.
David has slipped down the pecking order in attack, sitting behind GB and Andres Gomez, a winger who sometimes plays centrally. On the flank he was overlooked for Andrey Fernandes. The number seven was close to joining Vitória, but the deal fell through late on.
