Twenty years on, Vasco’s last victory over Paysandu came in the 2005 Brasileirão, 4-0 under Renato Gaúcho with goals from Romário and Morais. The sides meet again on Tuesday in Belém in the Copa do Brasil.

Globo.com notes that the win arrived during a recovery from a difficult league campaign. It effectively ended Vasco’s relegation fears and left Paysandu on the brink, a drop to Série B later confirmed.

At full-time, Renato crossed to the Papão bench to greet coach Carlos Alberto Torres, the Capita of Brazil’s three-time World Cup winners. It was Renato’s first spell at Vasco, when he kept a promise to pull the team from the Z-4 and still secure a Copa Sudamericana place.

The match also pitted then top scorer Robgol against Romário. The Paysandu striker troubled goalkeeper Roberto but failed to score. In the second half, Diego and Morais struck quickly for Vasco, before Romário added two to complete the rout.

The season proved pivotal for Morais, an academy product. After a loan at Athletico-PR, where he won the state title, he returned to São Januário for the Brasileirão and began one of the best spells of his career with standout displays and national recognition.

The clubs met twice more in 2016 in Série B, with the Pará side winning both fixtures. This week’s reunion marks Vasco’s Copa do Brasil debut, the club returning after last year’s campaign that ended as runners-up.
