Sassuolo earned a late 3-2 win against Juventus in Serie A last night, as Vasilije Adzic came off the bench to score the winner for the team he joined on loan from Juventus this season.

The Bianconeri had been the better team in their previous match against AC Milan, which ended in a draw, so their fans expected more of the same against Sassuolo. That level of performance could have been enough to secure a win.

Juve started the game well and controlled possession for much of the first half as they looked to break through a stubborn and well-organised Sassuolo side.

Sassuolo frustrate Juventus

However, Juventus could not find a way through, as their attacking line-up continued to misfire. Arijanet Muric was also in superb form in goal, denying Juve on several occasions, particularly the outstanding Kerim Alajbegovic.

At the break, the teams could not be separated. Both clubs made some changes after the restart, but it was the home side who took the lead through Sebastiano Esposito.

Edon Zhegrova equalised for Juve as the game came alive, but Sassuolo went in front again through Kieron Bowie. Juventus responded once more, with Zhegrova scoring again in added time to make it 2-2.

Adzic seals late victory

However, Juve were not satisfied with a draw and pushed for the win. Their desire to find a third goal left them exposed, and Sassuolo took advantage when Adzic scored the winning goal for the home side.

The result handed Juventus their first defeat of the season and brought a disappointing end to a match in which they had enjoyed control for significant periods.

For Sassuolo, the victory will be particularly satisfying after they had worked hard to frustrate Juventus for much of the contest. Muric’s performance in goal also played an important role in keeping the Bianconeri from taking control of the scoreline earlier.

Juve will now have to respond after suffering their first defeat of the campaign. They had opportunities to take something from the match, but Sassuolo showed greater effectiveness when the decisive moments arrived, with Adzic ultimately providing the difference in added time.
