Santos have confirmed Lucas Veríssimo as a new signing and he is registered in the CBF’s BID, but there is no timeframe for his arrival amid the conflict in Qatar.

His wife, Amanda Farias, said in an Instagram post that flights are suspended with no indication of reopening, and the family will not attempt a risky land crossing via Saudi Arabia.

She said they will not leave their two dogs or a household employee of another nationality behind, and that some people with animals had been turned back at crossings. She hoped for protection and a swift end.

The player’s representatives have considered moving overland to a nearby location before seeking a flight, but are proceeding cautiously given regional risks.

Veríssimo remains in the country with his wife, their son and young daughter, the dogs and the employee, and the family have no set route.

He is returning for a second spell at Santos on a contract through 2028. The deal is worth four million euros plus bonuses that could reach five million, with four annual instalments starting in December.

Although registered, he is likely to miss the match against Mirassol on Tuesday 10 at 21:30 at Maião, in the fifth round of the Brasileiro.

The centre-back came through Santos’ academy before spells at Benfica, Corinthians and Al-Duhail. For Santos he has seven goals in 190 appearances, winning the Copinha in 2013, the Paulista in 2016, and finishing Libertadores runners-up in 2021.
