Fourth tier amateur side Versailles’ extraordinary Coupe de France run finally came to an end at the semi-final stage at the hands of Nice.
Scorers: Gouiri 48′, Dolberg 73′
They held out valiantly and somewhat comfortably for the first 45 minutes without putting in a defensive rearguard and looked a threat when building out from the back.
But they fell behind shortly after the restart as Nice’s star youngster Amine Gouiri was picked out in space following a cross from the right and he calmly steadied himself before steering his half-volley into the top corner.
And Nice cruelly put the underdogs’ dream to bed with 17 minutes remaining with a goal that may have been finished by Kasper Dolberg but was all down to the fantastic feet, turn of pace and selflessness of Gouiri to race through before teeing him up.
The second semi-final between Nantes and Monaco takes place on Wednesday night, while the final takes place at the Stade de France on May 8.
