The Versailles prosecutor today demanded that Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema stand trial for his alleged complicity in the blackmail of former French national team colleague Mathieu Valbuena.
The case began five years ago, and the Real Madrid striker was indicted with five other people, including Djibril Cissé, with the ex-Liverpool and SC Bastia since seeing the case against him dismissed. In December 2019, the Court of Appeals rejected Benzema’s request to invalidate part of the investigation, which his team alleged was carried out “in an unfair manner,” by one of the police officers in charge of the investigation.
As a result, the case has been sent back to the Versailles court and is now in the hands of Anne Duval, the investigating judge who becomes the third in five years to work on this case.
