Guglielmo Vicario was furious with his Juventus teammates after the last-gasp 3-2 defeat to Sassuolo. ‘We talked about this all week, we cannot concede these goals.’

The Bianconeri were twice trailing to goals from Sebastiano Esposito and Kieron Bowie where the offside trap failed, managing both times to get it back on level terms with Edon Zhegrova solo strikes.

However, as they all poured forward trying to win it, they were caught completely flat-footed by Vasilije Adiz, who bent the finish around an ineffective Douglas Luiz for 3-2 with the last kick of the game.

The goalkeeper was visibly furious with his teammate for the lack of cover in a one-on-one situation.

“There is great bitterness, because I understand the desire to go and win the game, because we are Juventus and it is our obligation to aim for victory every time, but we lost our balance and we talked all week about this,” Vicario told DAZN Italia.

“Juventus cannot concede two goals like that. This is a club with a glorious history and we cannot allow goals like that. We need to be more calm and balanced, because we have a team full of quality, and we will be able to create chances.”

It comes just a week after Juventus had benefited from a late equaliser, when Federico Gatti came off the bench to snatch a 1-1 draw against Milan.

Does this result leave the Bianconeri with more anger or regret at the way it developed?

“In my view both, because we had managed to turn the tide in our favour. We must be able to control these moments of the match better, because we’ve got the quality,” continued Vicario, who is on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

“We’ve got to realise that we can score at the last second, but we can also concede, so need to be a bit more careful.”

Juventus are in the middle of an injury crisis, so are they feeling the effects of losing captain Manuel Locatelli for four to six months after meniscus surgery?

“Of course, he is a fundamental player for us, but we cannot hide behind these alibis,” replied the goalkeeper.

“We’re sad to be losing Manuel, but it’s a long-term injury, and we do have players of quality in the squad. We can’t just keep seeking excuses.”
