The rise and falls you get in football really are spectacular sometimes. Enzo Maresca was bathing in praise not long ago, now he’s being called out by fans on Youtube after a management disasterclass in the Champions League last night.

Matisse Armani on his Youtube channel.
Matisse Armani had our favourite takedown of the coach’s decisions:
“What you have done is absolutely catastrophic management. It’s insane, you’ve decided around the 65th minute, to take off Enzo [Fernandez], but not for [Andrey] Santos, we’re not bringing on some energy, some mobility, no… We’re not going add energy and tackling and interceptions, no we’re not adding that into the team. We’re putting in Malo Gusto. Into a midfield which already has Reece James. Which already, realistically, has Cucurella. So you’re going FOUR full backs on this pitch at once.”
“Tell me what you thought would happen? You had options. You had Estevao. You had Andrey Santos. You even could have put on Marc Guiu and dropped Joao Pedro back into the ten.”
He’s bang on. It was a classic case of the manager getting themselves into a complete tangle. By the end of the game there were more players playing out of position than in position, and the shape has changed so many times that nobody has any idea what they’re supposed to be doing.

Enzo Maresca has taken a lot of flak for his decisions in the game, as his fiddling around with formations and systems left Chelsea without much goal threat in the second half.
Chelsea’s half time changes caused a bit of a stir – and the coach was asked to explain why he made them in the press conference after the game.
