Liverpool and Newcastle fans came together in an emotional tribute to the late, great Kevin Keegan prior to kick-off in their Premier League fixture at St James’ Park this afternoon.

A legendary figure at both clubs, the former England international died on 20 July after a battle with stomach cancer, with heartfelt tributes pouring in throughout the world of football in the days and weeks which followed.

It felt fitting that two fanbases who idolise King Kev would meet in what, for both, is their first competitive fixture since the sad death of the 75-year-old, who was fittingly remembered on Tyneside today.

Emotional tributes to Kevin Keegan at St James’ Park

One stand at St James’ Park was a sea of red, white and black as supporters held aloft cards to form a mosaic which read ‘Keegan 7’, with the away fans forming the legend’s name and the home support displaying the shirt number with which he became synonymous.

Liverpool players wore this name and number on their training kit during the pre-game warm-up, and a giant banner was shown at the Gallowgate End which showed a famous quote from the great man:

“I want people to dream about their football club. They should. We should all be dreamers at heart. Some people are the opposite and say ‘We can’t do that’, but when you ask them why, they can’t give a reason. Well I say ‘Why not?'”

A fitting tribute to a true legend in Kevin Keegan

Newcastle and Liverpool fans can feel rightly proud of how they paid tribute to the great Kevin Keegan at St James’ Park today, with the Tyneside and Merseyside legend being shown the appreciation that he well and truly deserves.

The two-time Ballon D’Or winner wasn’t only one of the greatest figures in the history of those two clubs – he’s also regarded as a true great of the England national team, who he represented with distinction across 63 caps and two major tournaments.

The affection shown towards King Kev was in marked contrast to the antipathy from the natives towards Alexander Isak on the Reds striker’s first return to his former stomping ground since his tempestuous transfer from the Magpies 12 months ago.

However, unity is always stronger than division, and it was wonderful to see both sets of supporters coming together today to show their love for one of the all-time greats in Kevin Keegan.
