(Video) Most bizarre red card of the season: Idrissa Gana Gueye sent off for striking.. his own teammate!
The Premier League witnessed one of its most astonishing moments this season during Manchester United vs Everton as Idrissa Gana Gueye received straight red card for striking… his own teammate!
The incident occurred in the 13 minute at Old Trafford turning already difficult evening for Everton into full blown crisis.
Moments after Bruno Fernandes nearly scored with long range effort, tension suddenly erupted inside the Everton backline. Defender Michael Keane angrily confronted Gueye over misplaced pass that had gifted United dangerous chance.
Television replays showed Keane waving his arm in frustration.. without making physical contact.
Gueye, however reacted furiously.
According to the footage, the Senegalese midfielder raised his hand toward Keane’s face appearing to land light but deliberate strike.
Referee Tony Harrington standing only few metres away, immediately reached for the red card.
The VAR booth reviewed the incident and supported the decision fully, citing the Premier League regulation that any strike to the face regardless of force is automatic red card.
This is Gueye’s first straight red in 223 Everton appearance. His only previous dismissal came via second yellow.
The situation escalated even further after the red card was shown.
Cameras captured visibly furious Gueye attempting to confront Keane again before goalkeeper Jordan Pickford intervened, physically restraining him and pushing him toward the touchline.
As Gueye walked off the pitch in anger, Keane continued shouting in his direction adding to the surreal scene.
The chaos compounded disastrous few minutes for Everton who also lost captain Seamus Coleman to injury moments earlier.. his first league start of the season lasting only a few minutes.
