It’s been a long week of goalkeeper discussion, and on CBS Sports Jamie Carragher had his take on goalkeepers playing out from the back.
“It’s decision making… just because a coach gives you an instruction about what he wants, that does not mean you then have to do that consistently through the game,” the pundit pointed out.
“You’re the one on the pitch, you see a different picture to the coach on the sidelines. You’ve still got to make decisions, but with the coach’s idea in mind.
“There’s certain situations where, you’ve made a mistake, the next thing you do with that ball, it might be a different decision because of that mistake.”
That’s so clearly the case – being a goalkeeper who is “good with their feet” is really about their decision making and risk-reward analysis in the moment more than just how skilful they are or how good their touch is. Jorgensen looks calm on the ball, but that’s pointless if he doesn’t know instinctively when to play short and when to override his instructions.
You can see the pundit speaking in the clip embedded here:
Mamadou Sarr could start today, and he’s been speaking about what a crazy few months it’s been for him.
If you look at our predicted XI for the game, you’ll see we have Sarr in there to play today while Wesley Fofana is rested.
