Bad news for Viggo Gebel. The 17-year-old midfielder, who has already featured for both RB Leipzig’s U19s and the first team, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Saturday’s U19 match against Hallescher FC.

An MRI scan on Monday confirmed the diagnosis. Viggo is set to undergo surgery on Thursday and will likely miss the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

Marcel Schäfer, managing director for sport:

  1. “We’re fully behind Viggo as a club and will support him throughout every stage of his recovery. He can be sure that the entire first team is wishing him a speedy and complete recovery – and we’ll be by his side as he works his way back onto the pitch.”

Sebastian Heidinger, U19s head coach:

  1. “This is a tough blow – especially for Viggo, who’s a key part of our U19 side. We wish him a successful operation and want him to know that we’re here for him every step of the way.”
