Villarreal closed January with three arrivals, four departures and a €3.2 million outlay, rounding off a quieter deadline than summer.
El Periódico Mediterráneo reports that after a lavish summer, €102 million spent and €108 million recouped, deadline night brought no late twists beyond those moves.
The hierarchy, led by chief executive Fernando Roig Negueroles with Miguel Ángel Tena and Fernando Seguí, had not planned much business, yet sporting and off-field developments altered the picture.
Thiago Fernández, an Argentine winger pre-agreed in August, arrived on one January from Vélez Sarsfield on a free after 13 months sidelined by a serious knee injury and a stand-off over renewal.
Villarreal then took Alfon González on loan from Sevilla, covering his wages, with a €seven million non-obligatory option, the winger having seen little action and carrying an injury.
Finally, Juan Foyth’s season-ending left Achilles rupture prompted a €3.2 million move, plus €two million in add-ons, for United States right-back Alex Freeman from MLS side Orlando City.
With Champions League and Copa del Rey exits leaving a surplus, Manor Solomon asked Tottenham to cancel his loan to join Fiorentina, while right-back Adrià Altimira left on a free for Deportivo.
Ilias Akhomach, fresh from the Africa Cup of Nations with Morocco, extended to June 2028 then sought minutes on loan at Rayo Vallecano. Fernández, not in Marcelino’s plans and described as a club signing, was loaned to Real Oviedo.
