Matías Viña has joined River Plate on a one-year loan to December after falling outside Flamengo’s plans for 2026. The Uruguay defender promised total commitment at his new club.
“I tell the fans my commitment will not be lacking. River demands 100% dedication, and that means winning every match. It is the first time I feel a team want me with this desire. It was an easy decision,” he told ESPN Argentina.
Viña arrives billed as a major addition and hopes to build rhythm ahead of the World Cup in mid-year with Uruguay. At Flamengo he was third choice at left-back behind Alex Sandro and Ayrton Lucas.
The 28-year-old has joined for one year, with River to pay $500,000 over the period. If he features in at least 50% of the club’s matches this year, an obligation to buy worth $5m will be activated.
Flamengo paid about R$ 42.8m to sign Viña from Roma in early 2024, but in August that year he suffered a serious knee injury that kept him out for 10 months, costing him his place in the squad.
