At one stage, Gareth Bale was linked with a shock takeover of Plymouth Argyle but a move never materialised. In June 2025, Bale was then first linked with boyhood club Cardiff City but nothing came of the interest at that time either.

Vincent Tan has invested plenty into Cardiff but it's fair to say that a change of direction would not be unwelcome in South Wales, even after helping Cardiff gain promotion out of League One at the first time of asking.

A year ago, pundits like Lee Hendrie felt it would be a great fit for Bale and Cardiff. In the end, it looked as though Tan was going to reject the consortium's offer to buy Cardiff. However, fresh developments have emerged since regarding Bale and his interest in the Championship side.

But more recently, the legendary Wales winger and former captain has been talking about buying a club again. Bale has refused to rule out a move for Cardiff again despite it not working out the first time with Tan.

Bale never played for Cardiff, with the Cardiff-born 36-year-old having come through the ranks at Southampton and having played over 200 games for both Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid as well. He could yet make a return bid to acquire Cardiff from Tan.

In the midst of that, as revealed by BBC Sport Wales on X (formerly Twitter), Tan has converted £42 million of Cardiff's debt to him into equity, nearly halving the amount the club owes to its majority shareholder.

Evidently, the club is in a healthy enough financial position and it is arguably primed for a takeover and some fresh ideas at the very top, be that with a consortium backed by Bale or another bidder instead.

Gareth Bale would be the most romantic story for Cardiff City

After more than a decade under Tan's ownership, there is a growing argument that Cardiff would benefit from a fresh start. While Tan has invested significant sums into the club and overseen two promotions to the Premier League, Cardiff have also endured periods of instability.

That has meant managerial turnover and, fairly recently, relegation to League One. Results on the pitch for the Bluebirds have often failed to match the ambition shown off it, and many supporters feel the club has since stagnated under the current regime.

Sometimes a change of ownership can bring that renewed energy and fresh ideas a club needs, as well as a different long-term vision. Cardiff increasingly look like a club that could benefit from exactly that in the next year or two.
