FC Bayern are in an alarming mood off the pitch. While the Munich side continue to march through the Bundesliga unbeaten, there are growing concerns about a possible wave of illness in the squad ahead of the home game against FC Augsburg
One thing is certain: Dayot Upamecano will not be available for the German record champions on Saturday either. After the Champions League match against Union Saint-Gilloise, the centre-back will now also miss the Bundesliga clash with FCA. Head coach Vincent Kompany confirmed the new absence at the press conference on Friday morning, striking an unusually serious tone. „Upa is out. He’ll definitely be in bed for a few more days now. When a virus like that comes into the dressing room, I’m always a bit scared. So hopefully no one else will be out,“ explained the Belgian

This statement became even more explosive just a few hours later. Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl were missing from the non-public final training session at Säbener Straße, as reported by BILD. Whether these were precautionary measures or actual illnesses remained unclear at first. Kompany had already hinted earlier with a wink, but not without seriousness, that the personnel situation could change at short notice. „We’ll see who plays. Hopefully nobody has spent too much time with Upa in the last 24 hours,“ said the 39-year-old with a view to possible infections
The possible absence of shooting star Lennart Karl would hit Bayern particularly hard. The 17-year-old has been one of the most noticeable players in attack in recent weeks and has firmly established himself in the rotation. An absence due to illness would come at an inopportune time
Concerns over further absentees have hit FC Bayern in an already tense personnel situation. In defence, two important options are already missing in Konrad Laimer, who is out due to a torn muscle fibre, and Josip Stanisic, who is still struggling with a capsular ligament injury in his ankle. Alphonso Davies has also recently been laid up with influenza, while Sacha Boey is still not fully fit again after a persistent stomach bug
Despite this, Kompany is remaining emphatically calm. „Despite the absences, we still have good competition in defence. Kim is fit, Ito is fit, Bischof and Guerreiro have always helped us in this position,“ emphasised the Bayern coach. He also pointed to flexible alternatives: „We also have Kimmich, if we need him, and Goretzka, who have already played well for us in this position.“
Whether this depth of personnel is sufficient now depends less on tactical issues and more on the health of the squad. One thing is clear: FC Bayern want to continue their impressive run – but a virus of all things could pose a threat to the league leaders.
