Dani Vivián is still training separately a month after suffering an adductor problem, having missed all eight of Athletic’s friendlies. The club said in a statement on 16 July that he had an insertional injury to the right adductor longus, and he could miss the first matches as he has not yet rejoined full training.
Like last season under Ernesto Valverde, centre-back has been a headache from the outset. Then Yeray Álvarez’s positive test and a long-term setback for Unai Egiluz left only Aitor Paredes and Vivián available, with Yuri and Lekue filling in until Aymeric Laporte arrived in September.
Now Terzic has Paredes and Yeray, plus Laporte, who returned to training last week after a post-World Cup break. He was not selected for the final friendly in Bergamo, but with another week’s work Laporte could be named in Saturday’s squad to face Sevilla at San Mamés.
Terzic will rely on that trio in the opening fixtures while Vivián completes his recovery without the benefit of pre-season minutes. With seven Liga matches packed in before 20 September, a swift comeback looks difficult, and the defender will need conditioning time once he is passed fit.
Vivián is a mainstay, topping 40 appearances in each of the last three seasons. He has rarely missed time through injury, making this lay-off unusual since his first-team return.
