WAC ahead!

Article image:WAC ahead!

Back to league business from Saturday

It will be WAC instead of Zenica and Markus Pink instead of Edin Dzeko this weekend – our internationals are back, and with them, domestic football is finally back too. Thomas Letsch's charges are bound for Carinthia, where Wolfsberger AC will host them on Saturday at 17:00 CEST for Matchday 6 of the ADMIRAL Bundesliga.

Our last away fixture at WAC is one we do not want to remember. In April, we only managed to score a consolation goal, with the 2-0 lead gained by new Austrian international Erik Kojzek proving too much of a hurdle. As the youngster is still recovering, we will be spared the prospect of him sounding out the Ti, moja rozica goal jingle at the Lavanttal Arena this weekend.

Our record against WAC has been extremely impressive, with 10 wins and 3 draws in head-to-heaad encounters since 2020, until the slip-up in April. There is also plenty to be positive about in the current season: we have four headed goals and 6 substitute goals to date – both of which are league bests! In addition, 5-goal striker Petar Ratkov is in top form, having already equalled his Bundesliga tally for the 2023/24 season. It's no surprise that you voted our giant marksman Player of the Month for August.

If he celebrates another goal in southern Austria, he will match Patson Daka: in spring 2021, our former player also scored in five consecutive matches (ultimately even in seven matches in a row). Stevie Lainer will be there to help with all his experience, as the tireless full-back is about to make his 150th appearance in the Austrian top flight.

Didi Kühbauer's side had time to lick their wounds during the international break. Their European exit on penalties in Cyprus has to be overcome. Things are not going as they wanted at home this season with two wins and defeats against Altach, PAOK Saloniki and Rapid.

The match will be broadcast by Sky Sport Austria, along with our free matchday radio and live ticker. Fans going there can purchase tickets at the away ticket office approximately 90 minutes before kick-off. All further information for away fans is listed here.

We still remember last season, when we struggled against Wolfsberg and ultimately lost. That was a long time ago though and a lot has changed at both clubs, especially in terms of personnel. WAC are taking a similar footballing approach to last year. We expect to face tough opponents, but we want to prevail against them and restart after the international break with a good result.

Thomas Letsch on the clash against WAC

We're spoiled for choice, especially in attack—in a positive sense—because we have so many players who are potential starters. Accordingly, it is a good opportunity for us to bring in fresh players who can have a positive impact on the game.

Thomas Letsch on the many goals from substitutes (6)

Our last meetings with WAC were always close and hard-fought. I expect it will be the same on Saturday, and we'll face a tough battle. Of course, we want to get off to a strong start after the international break. Therefore, it's important for us to implement our match plan precisely and do everything we can to secure the three points.
