According to Globo.com, Grêmio have unveiled 21-year-old centre-back Wallace, who said Inter were among the clubs to make an approach as he explained his decision to join. He wants his career to move up a level in Porto Alegre.

He made his first appearance last Saturday, coming on in the second half of a 2-1 friendly win over Cascavel in the interior of Paraná, partnering Kannemann.

The defender has signed a five-year deal and will wear 82, a tribute to his mother’s birth date.

He said Red Bull Bragantino, Botafogo, Inter and teams in Europe had shown interest, but he opted for Grêmio for its history and because he felt it would help him beyond the professional side. Wallace added that he had prepared mentally for the challenge, understood the weight of the shirt and did not hesitate when the call came.

Grêmio bought 50% of his rights from CRB for R$ 3 million, with the Alagoas club retaining the remaining 50%.

Right-footed and 1.90m tall, he is most at home on the right of defence, where competition includes Gustavo Martins, Balbuena and Luís Eduardo from the academy. He has also filled in on the left, at right-back and as a defensive midfielder.

Grêmio recently sold centre-back Viery to Fiorentina, and Wallace spoke of taking on that legacy as a significant step in his career. He is the club’s first signing announced for the second half of the year.
