Walsall close in on Wembley

Walsall have one foot firmly in a League Two play-off final at Wembley after a 2-0 win away to Chesterfield in the first leg.

There is, of course, still a long way to go in this time with a full 90 minutes left to be played but after being 2-0 up in the first half of the first leg, Saddlers fans could be forgiven for thinking about how to get to Wembley.

Taylor Allen put Walsall up with a cool penalty as he sent goalkeeper Ryan Boot the wrong way with just under half an hour left to go.

Then Alfie Chang found the best possible time to score his first ever senior league goal. The midfielder, on loan from Birmingham City, saw the ball come out to the edge of the area and he lashed into the net to make it 2-0.

Walsall did need a late save from Tommy Simkin to preserve their two-goal advantage after a cross from the left allowed substitute Aribim Pepple to head at goal from close range but the goalkeeper was able to hold on to the header.

It will require a big performance from the Spireites in the second leg to turn this tie around, something they can potentially do in Friday night's game.
