Jed Ward was the standout as Walsall drew 1-1 at Tranmere Rovers.

ExpressAndStar.com reports that Ward received an eight in the player ratings, with six team-mates marked five. He denied Charlie Whitaker and Tom Ince, then saved Joe Ironside’s penalty and diverted Whitaker’s rebound onto the post. The hosts then went ahead.

Elicha Ahui struggled against Whitaker and was withdrawn. Declan Skura was loose in possession yet strong in the air, with recovery tackles. James Connolly headed a half-chance over and made a crucial block to stop Dylan Jones.

Sven Sprangler was booked early and conceded the spot-kick for a foul on Whitaker. Isaac Moore failed to close spaces as Ince threatened between the lines. Lewis Simper’s corner created a half-chance for Connolly, but he otherwise failed to impress.

Andy Dallas ran in behind and drew a save from Harrison Male, but his execution lacked quality. Aaron Pressley was quiet and missed the best opening from close range. Smith carried a threat out wide and finished low into the corner for 1-1.

From the bench, Tai Sodje came on at 58 but struggled to influence the game during a three-forward spell. Albert Adomah attacked down the right. Ryan Leak replaced Ahui at 77 as Skura moved to right-back. On 87, Will Etheridge teed up Smith on his second league appearance.
