Walsall transfer picture as Lee Grant's squad takes shape and priorities emerge | OneFootball

Walsall have made six signings, yet Lee Grant says there is more to do after a goalless pre-season opener at Leamington.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, Jed Ward, James Connolly, Sven Sprangler, Lewis Simper and Andrew Dallas have joined permanently, with Isaac Moore arriving on loan from Coventry City last week. All bar Connolly featured in that friendly.

Ward signed from Bristol Rovers on a three-year deal plus a 12-month option, hinting he could be first choice. Jenson Kilroy did not play, a trialist came on after the break, suggesting another goalkeeper, and a loan could aid his development.

Dallas led the line and had a first-half effort ruled out for offside. Pressley aims to kick on, but more firepower still looks necessary, ideally a permanent and perhaps a later-window loan.

Despite Connolly’s arrival, centre-back remains thin after departures, with Harrison Burke a vocal presence with the armband after the interval. At least two more defenders could be needed, while Rico Browne offers versatility.

After Connor Barrett left for Wigan Athletic, Browne and Elicha Ahui covered right-back, and Mason Hancock will compete with Vincent Harper on the left. Given Ahui’s 10-month ACL lay-off, focus may sit elsewhere for now.

Grant has prioritised midfield after Brandon Comley, Charlie Lakin, Jamie Jellis and Alfie Chang departed. Sprangler looks set to anchor, Moore brings box-to-box energy and Simper could be the creator in the No 10 role. Alex Pattison, Courtney Clarke and Ronan Maher add depth, though business might not be over.
