A fixture for Paris Saint-Germain, Warren Zaïre-Emery is still awaiting a bigger role with France, a situation he says he is now handling before their opener against Senegal on Tuesday at 21:00. He trained with the squad on Friday.
He played 12 minutes in the 3-1 win over Northern Ireland on Monday. According to L'Équipe, he is viewed as third-choice right-back behind Jules Koundé and Malo Gusto, and likely the fifth option in midfield.
The paradox is stark. He has made 54 appearances in all competitions this season, more than half at right-back, for the European champions, and was among their three most used players, not in third place.
Asked on Saturday about the contrast, he said he is dealing with it as best he can, staying humble, giving his best and pushing team-mates. He had zero minutes at Euro 2024 and found that hard, but says his outlook has shifted.
He welcomed his versatility as giving the coach and team more options and said he enjoys any role. He recounted that Didier Deschamps asked him on Friday to fill in at left-back in training and he accepted readily, adding with a laugh that he would even go in goal if needed.
His focus for the summer is simple, enjoy himself and try to win the World Cup for the country.
