People looking at Chelsea right now, especially Chelsea fans, can’t believe that the sporting directors keep getting away with what they see as doing a terrible job.

The club have spent more than a billion to improve their squad marginally, and to reach the Champions League places a grand total of once, unless there’s a miracle to end this season.

So it’s interesting to hear from Nizaar Kinsella of the BBC what the counter-argument is.

Kinsella explains Chelsea’s defence of sporting directors

“[The sporting directors] would argue that they have reduced the wage bill, balanced the books and still won a couple of trophies last season,” Kinsella wrote.

“They felt they were making progress under Maresca, but his decision to effectively walk away left them taking a backward step before they could move forward again. People inside Chelsea believe they have recruited well in many areas, with some wastage inevitable at a big club.”

Some wastage may be inevitable, but the hit rate surely has to be over 50% before you can say they’re doing their job. How many of the transfers they’ve made since they took charge could you honestly say have been a succcess?

Josh Acheampong continues to be linked with moves away from Chelsea, with a major European giant now in the mix to try and sign up the defender.

Thomas Tuchel has been speaking about Cole Palmer’s fitness, and he pointed out something interesting about the attacker’s strides.
