Hansi Flick tasted one of his biggest defeats as a Barcelona coach as the Catalan side succumbed to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Sevilla.
It was a disappointing evening for the Barcelona players, perhaps personified by Ronald Araujo’s angry outburst at the referees early on in the game.
Indeed, Araujo erupted in frustration toward the officials, only to be calmed by manager Hansi Flick.
The incident unfolded in the 13th minute at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, as VAR reviewed a potential penalty against Araujo for fouling Sevilla’s Isaac Romero in the box.
The Uruguayan centre-back, visibly frustrated, gestured wildly and verbally confronted the fourth official, stating, “You swallowed it, you believed it, you took the bait!” He then turned to the main referee, shouting, “It’s unbelievable what you’re doing, unbelievable!”
Flick, though, was quick to intervene, pulling Araujo away and urging him to compose himself amid the sideline chaos.
The penalty was ultimately awarded, and former Barça winger Alexis Sanchez coolly converted it to give Sevilla a 1-0 lead.
This early setback set the tone for a disastrous afternoon for the Blaugrana, who were already reeling from injuries, including the absence of teenage star Lamine Yamal.
Sevilla capitalised ruthlessly, with Isaac Romero adding a second goal before halftime, followed by strikes from Jose Angel Carmona and Akor Adams in stoppage time.
Barcelona’s lone consolation came from Marcus Rashford, whose injury at the end didn’t turn out to be serious. The Catalans could have scored one more through Robert Lewandowski, but the veteran striker missed a penalty.
The loss marked Barcelona’s second straight defeat in all competitions. The Catalans now move to second in LaLiga behind Real Madrid, heading into the second international break of the season.
