Vasco have taken a significant step towards selling 90% of their SAF after court-appointed watchdog Athos Neves issued a favourable opinion on Wednesday. Talks with businessman Marcos Lamacchia are well advanced, though Neves did not name him in his report.

According to Globo.com, Neves was chosen by consensus between the club and the judiciary as a neutral figure, having served as judicial intervenor during the week Pedrinho was suspended in July. He has access to SAF reports and finances and oversees governance.

In a filing to the court, Neves said he would not oppose the club's requests provided publicity, transparency, competitiveness and the maximisation of the asset's value are ensured.

It is the first positive response from an external actor. The club must still obtain authorisations from the judicial administrator, Gussem e Lemos Basto Advogados, from the Public Prosecutor's Office and from the presiding judge.

The operation is not yet fully cleared, though Wednesday's development was welcomed internally. If the remaining approvals arrive, the club can launch a competitive process for the stake.

By law, a deal with Lamacchia cannot be concluded before that process opens, although he holds preference clauses to match any rival offer.
