Watford beat Southampton 2-1 at Vicarage Road to open their Championship season, moving into the early play-off places as the visitors start bottom on -4 points.

Iker Bravo Solanilla put the hosts ahead in the 12th minute, finishing low from the centre of the box. Moments later, Marc Bola was forced off injured (24.) before Jordan Zemura slotted in at left back, and Amin Nabizada doubled the lead on a fast break (29.).

After the restart, Cyle Larin pulled one back for the visitors with a composed finish (56.), converting Cameron Bragg's pass through the middle.

Federico Ravaglia then preserved the advantage with sharp stops, first tipping away Larin's effort (58.) and later denying Jack Stephens from close range (78.). The Hornets cleared their lines repeatedly in the closing stages.

Deep into second half stoppage time, the Saints forced a flurry of corners, but the home defence held firm.
