Wayne Bridge believes Sunderland would feel Granit Xhaka’s absence if the midfielder were to leave after a standout first season on Wearside.

“I’m not sure. Xhaka has made such a great impact up there and probably still has a couple of years left there,” he told 10bet.

“He’s obviously one of their main players and he’s made a massive impact. If he leaves, it would be a massive miss for them.”

“Sunderland have been brilliant this season. They would have been a lot of people’s favourites to go straight back down, but they’ve been excellent and Xhaka has been instrumental in that.”

Xhaka, 33, joined last summer and took the captain’s armband, anchoring midfield and boosting Sunderland’s survival push with assured performances.

His switch from Champions League football with Bayer Leverkusen raised eyebrows, but he has since spoken about seeking a fresh challenge and an immediate connection with the North East.

Bridge, a former full-back, made 10 appearances for Sunderland during his own career.
