Sunderland will face Wrexham in a pre-season friendly in Pennsylvania this summer, and Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has offered warm praise for the Black Cats ahead of the meeting.

The club said in a statement that the squad will spend a week in Nashville, finishing with Liverpool at Geodis Park on Saturday 25 July. They will then head to Harrison, New Jersey to play Leeds United at the Sports Illustrated Stadium on Thursday 30 July, before concluding against Wrexham at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania on Sunday 02 August.

The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star said he was moved by Sunderland Til’ I Die, called facing Sunderland in Philadelphia an honour, and revealed he backed them in the play-offs. He was delighted when they went up last year, believing they deserved it.

He made the remarks while joining co-owner Ryan Reynolds on the commentary gantry during Wrexham’s 2-0 Championship win over Swansea City on Friday evening.

At the time of writing, there remains a distinct possibility Wrexham could join Sunderland in the Premier League next term. The Championship club have enjoyed three successive promotions under former Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson, and they are sixth in the second tier after winning four of their past five league matches.
