Manchester United started their campaign in the worst possible way as they lost 2-0 away to newly promoted Hull City.

Poor start

The Red Devils ended last season successfully, finishing third and qualifying for the Champions League.

After a relatively busy summer, Manchester United fans would have been hopeful entering the new season, and whilst it has only been one game, the alarm bells will be ringing slightly for Michael Carrick.

United have the perfect chance to respond at home to Ipswich Town, as Old Trafford will welcome its team for the first time this season on Sunday.

Naturally, pundits have had a lot to say about United’s turgid performance against Hull City, and their all-time top goalscorer, Wayne Rooney, was no different.

Drop two players

Speaking on Stick to United, Rooney advised Carrick to drop two players ahead of the match against the Tractor Boys.

He explained, “I think players need to take responsibility on the pitch because when you play against a Hull City or Ipswich, the next game, you can set up however you want to set up and a lot of the time it’s decision.”

Rooney explained that you can practise what you want on the training pitch, but ultimately it is the decisions the players make on the pitch that will define the result.

The pundit then stated that he would make two changes to the line-up ahead of the game.

The former striker explained, “I’d change Luke Shaw and I’d play Dorgu at left-back, be a bit more aggressive. I don’t think we can rely on him [Shaw] to play all the games so when you’re playing against a newly promoted team at home, I’d play Dorgu at left-back.”

Rooney also explained that he would move Matheus Cunha away from the number nine position, play him off the left, and put Marcus Rashford up front.

Finally, he then advised Carrick to “bring Mainoo in for Santos.”
