England were deserved winners against Andorra at Villa Park on Saturday evening, winning the game 2-0.
Christian García’s own goal and Declan Rice’s header proved to be the pivotal moments for The Three Lions to win the game, as they moved one step closer to qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
The England boss was in good spirits following his side’s performance.
“We created more than we converted in Andorra and today as well, we had a lot of chances for goals, we have to be more clinical.
“Overall there are more positives than negatives – there are things to improve but we are going in the right direction, I think we should’ve won with more goals but it’s not a problem because the energy and attitude was right.
“The goal is the World Cup, but the goal right now is the qualification first, we are first in the group and we have another step to make on Tuesday.
“We want to win the group, it to be demanded from ourselves, this is the way forward.”
Tuchel was questioned on England’s progress since he took on the role and the learnings he has taken so far.
“We are getting there, I’m very positive about the group and how they presented themselves, how they behaved, how they trained and how they played today.
“It’s important that it’s clear how we want to attack, it’s clear how we want to defend. This was a very good first step.”
Elliot Anderson received his full England debut and put on a fantastic display, earning him some high praise.
“He’s a very good football player, he has the physicality and he is a mobile six – he loves to defend and wins duels, he loves to pass and break the lines – it’s a pleasure to see.
“He was a bit nervous when he first came here but he has very quickly adapted to the quality. I think the team around him made it as easy as possible for him and he had a strong performance.
“He played with a lot of freedom, he has the physicality and mindset – he is clearly in the mix to play against Serbia.”
Reece James got an assist in the fixture, but the right-back position has plenty of competition and leaves Tuchel with a decision to make. However, he has confirmed that James is ‘ahead’ of his competition for his position.
“He’s slightly ahead in his position, he has the quality to defend against every opponent and he has the quality to make the difference with his right foot in shooting, passing and crossing. He is crucial to us.”
Despite England’s opponents being ranked 174th in the world ranking, The Three Lions found the net twice over the 90 minutes, and Tuchel remained positive with his teams discipline.
“I think when we made the right choices in the right moments, we created the chances, I think we created enough to win comfortably.”
England will now turn their attention to an away trip to Serbia on Tuesday evening, as they look to make it five wins out of five from their UEFA World Cup qualifiers.
