Haris Tabaković’s 85th-minute header proved nothing more than a late consolation as the Foals fell to another damaging loss - stretching their winless run to seven matches and leaving them nervously glancing towards the bottom three.
Head coach Eugen Polanski delivered an honest and direct assessment after the final whistle:
“I certainly can’t question my team’s desire, but football is a results business – and right now we’re not getting the results. Especially in the first half, we had enough opportunities to put crosses in, but too often we made it more complicated than it needed to be. We crossed too late or not accurately enough, and we didn’t have enough bodies in the box.
We have to be more direct and more purposeful. We know the situation in the table is dangerous, and we also know what we have to show in the coming games. In the end, it doesn’t matter how we play – we have to deliver results now.”
Goalscorer Tabaković echoed his manager’s frustration, admitting the performance fell short of what is required in their current predicament:
“The defeat really hurts. In the closing stages, we tried everything to force an equaliser – and we did that pretty well. But overall it wasn’t enough. We have to play like that from the first minute, get more balls into the box, defend better and can’t concede such simple goals.
We’re not posing enough of a threat up front at the moment – and that’s how results like this come about. We know what the table looks like and that we have to start picking up points.”
Gladbach will now turn their attention to next weekend’s fixture, with a big response needed as Union Berlin visit Borussia-Park on Saturday (15:30 CET).
