Milan Primavera were hoping for a historic afternoon at the Arena Civica as they took on Cagliari in the Coppa Italia final, but it didn’t go entirely to plan.
The young Rossoneri ultimately fell at the final hurdle in their cup journey as they were beaten 3-0 by Cagliari in the final on Wednesday afternoon.
The Sardinians scored first through the captain captain Vinciguerra who took advantage of some hesitation from the defence, then Bolzan doubled the lead 10 minutes before the break.
Bonomi rattled the crossbar with a penalty just before half-time to make it obvious it wasn’t Milan’s day, and Trepy’s deflected shot sealed the Coppa Italia for Cagliari late on.
After the game and the medal ceremony, the head coach Federico Guidi spoke to reporters to offer his thoughts on a difficult afternoon for his side but one they can learn and grow from. MilanNews relayed his comments.
What did you say to the team after the match?
“We haven’t had a chance yet. It’s clear that what I’ll try to do is make them raise their heads. We have to separate the result from the path they’re having.
“Even today in the match the result is very heavy but if we look at it we played the whole match in their half of the pitch, they were cynical and more experienced than us in capitalising. Finals are also this, managing to get over the disappointment and learning from what went well and what didn’t.
“Against experienced teams you have to make an impact with few moments. I have to concentrate on what the boys are doing and I also liked the approach to the match, even in the second half they pushed. We have to be good at resetting and gaining experience from this type of match.”
As a teacher as well as a coach, what will you try to instil in the players’ minds?
“When you work with young people, it is emotions that guide us and send us up or down. Either you take it as a great lesson, you raise your head and react to continue on your path because you want to turn your passion into your job.
“Or the great disappointment, you do like an ostrich, you stick your head in the ground and let yourself be overwhelmed but it would be an unforgivable mistake. Disappointments are part of life.”
Matteo Dutu also spoke to the journalists who gathered to offer his take on a disappointing defeat for him and his team-mates, but a learning experience against a side who are much older in average age.
It’s a disappointment, but now the play-offs are the goal…
“Certainly how we have worked in this period, giving our all in training and listening to the staff. We learn from defeats. It is not easy but we are a strong group.
“A defeat that hurts, the defeat is even too heavy but we will aim to reach our objective, leaving the final behind us but remembering the final as a lesson.”

Did you feel the pressure?
“We didn’t hear it. If we evaluate the match, we played a good game: we were in their area of the pitch and created many opportunities. They were moments: they took three shots and took advantage of them. Congratulations to them.”
Was the missed penalty the decisive moment?
“It was definitely an incident that could have changed the game but we also had other opportunities to reopen it. We could have got it back on its feet, the moments today were not on our side.”
