We name 28 Rangers players and what we’d do with them

When it comes to figuring what Rangers players just aren’t up to it, where do we start with this squad?

It’s abundantly clear that while Rangers should be a lot better under Rohl than they are, they still fall well short of Rangers’ clear standards.

And consequently, Ibrox Noise takes you on a journey of our take on which players are worth keeping and who should go.

We start in goal. Jack Butland. He is literally our best player. By a distance. While he had a horrible year between last March (2024) and this one, he’s really stepped up since then. He’s shone. Sad, but yes, our goalie is by far our best player.

The rest of the goalies are mince. Liam Kelly is fine as a deputy but falls considerably short of Rangers levels. But we may as well hold onto him. Kieran Wright and Mason Munn are irrelevant.

In defence is where the real mess is.

Every single fullback is absolutely dire.

James Tavernier gets the goals and assists but as a defender Tavernier doesn’t rank in the top 10 in the SPL for any single significant defensive contribution this season. Tackles, blocks, interceptions – he’s miles off it.

Jayden Meghoma is a Preston reject. This sums up why we’re looking elsewhere. Thankfully he’s a loan.

Max Aarons is a football reject – he was PL level till injury then loss of form, and after that he became garbage and Bournemouth won’t touch him. Aarons will be lower EFL league before long. If he’s lucky.

So not a single fullback is worthy.

Centrebacks:

John Souttar is a decent stopper but hasn’t shone this season. Like Tav he’s not top 10 for anything. He’s suffering having no reliable partner. No stable partner.

Nasser Djiga is a much, MUCH better defender than that one error made him look. He was outstanding against Falkirk (ignored by those who would rather hate him) and managed a ridiculous 12 clearances. 94% passing. He is good enough, more than. But needs someone he can actually play alongside. He just hasn’t had that. Immaterial though, he’s a loan anyway.

Manny Fernandez has actually surprised us a little – but sorry, we’ll never want a Peterborough League One cast off to be our star defender. We’re as biased against him as 99% of fans currently are against Djiga.

Derek Cornelius is a Canada international but he’s a bit of an unknown quantity at this point. He is also a loan but with option. We can’t say he’s really impressed us much but his CV is up there with Djiga’s.

Midfield:

Nico Raskin: we’ve had enough of this guy. He’s slept through too many games and just doesn’t want to be here any more. He’s waiting for the right offer and has no intention of signing a deal. He says he doesn’t want to run his contract down and wants to give Rangers something back, but we’re not sure we believe a word of that.

Joe Rothwell: do we even need to offer our comments here?

Mohamed Diomande: such a poor signing, but seems marketable. If we can get a good chunk of change here, get shot of him.

Thelo Aasgaard: we warned that this piece of EFL slop was overpriced mince, and that looks like it was kind. Get rid of this guy.

Connor Barron: he’s been ok. We’d keep him for squad depth. He is never good enough to be a starter for any Rangers that’s recognisable.

Lyall Cameron: Rohl doesn’t like him so we just never get a look at the lad – but we did explain why. He will likely be surplus.

Findlay Curtis is also in that same boat.

Dujon Sterling: we look forward to seeing him back. We pray he doesn’t get injured again.

Kieran Dowell: do you have to ask?

Attack

Mikey Moore: We can’t see ‘the game he’s come onto’ that other fans have. He’s got a goal and two assists but that’s underwhelming for a supposed £20M value PL player. He’s been a poor signing and we were all for him at the start. Thankfully a loan.

Rabbi Matondo: again, must you ask?

Nedim Bajrami: yet more weird signings from the Clement era. It’s a no from us.

Djeidi Gassama: had a bit of impact under Russell Martin as a sub, but overall, what did you expect from a lower EFL Sheffield player?

Oliver Antman: Great CV, but not showing much on the pitch. Under a decent manager and better team mates he would surely shine. Don’t sparkle in the Eredivisie and for your country if you’re poor, but he’s not been able to soar yet.

Bojan Miovski: howling signing. We warned about this being permanent. We wanted it to be loan with option. And this is why. He’s been horrible.

Danilo: he’s not very good, sorry. Missed a borderline open goal and he’s the club’s top-paid player. We’d ship this guy out regardless of his da.

Youssef Chermiti: do you have to ask?

In short, this is the worry.

We count barely a handful of players in this list we even tolerate, never mind like. This squad is so stunningly poor by Rangers levels.

The only ones of any gravity are Butland, Sterling, Antman and Djiga. And the latter two haven’t exactly done it for us. While Sterling isn’t even fit! Barron and Cameron and Curtis as squad maybe, and Souttar in the same boat. Derek Cornelius has the CV and the potential.

This is all our take, you guys and gals may think considerably differently.

Oh what a mess.
