The Maestre era at London City Lionesses kicks-off with a fixture at the Barclays Women’s Super League’s bottom club.
When speaking to the media in the pre-match press conference, London City Lionesses boss Maestre expressed the need for his side to be humble when facing a Liverpool team that he believes are better than their ranking suggests.
“We need to be humble because when you look at Liverpool’s previous matches, they’ve got less than they’ve deserved,” Maestre said. “Their last match against Chelsea was a one-off because they did well in other games against top opponents.
“We need to be prepared for a battle, be a humble team and recognise our skills that we can put up against the wingers of Liverpool. All of the staff have that humble vision.”
Going on to discuss mentality further, Maestre explained that his side need to have a balance of staying humble and ambition going forward.
He said “I’m a very ambitious coach but we need to have that balance; we need to be at a high level and be the best version of ourselves and that needs to be built from that humble vision. If we want to win, we need to be better than the opponent and we need to respect the opponent’s strengths, trying to get ourselves in that mood.
“For me, being in that mindset and in that mentality is important because it’s not only Liverpool, we are going to have to play all opponents.”
Commenting on his coaching style, Maestre said that he likes to be close to his players and that development is important.
He said “I’m very ambitious and show a lot of attention to detail. I also like being close to the players, changing formation and adapting and giving them all of the details to compete throughout the season.
“I want to create an environment where I can improve the skills of all of the players. I want to build a stronger collective vision.
“I’m very ambitious, I like attacking football and I only think about winning games. I like to find the ways to win games.”
London City Lionesses’ Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Liverpool kicks-off at 2.30pm.
