After suffering a broken fibula at last summer’s Club World Cup, Jamal Musiala made his long-awaited return to action for FC Bayern Munich in January.
The 23-year-old then suffered a setback in March, which kept him out of a handful of matches for Bayern as well as Germany’s friendlies against Switzerland and Ghana, before returning to action once again at the beginning of this month.
At the weekend, Musiala was named in the starting XI for the first time since his setback, and he repaid the trust with a goal and an assist in Bayern’s 5-0 win over St. Pauli.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany discussed Musiala’s ongoing push to return to top form, saying things are moving in the right direction while emphasising that there's still work to be done.
“Things are all going very positively. It's sometimes tough to explain the details. What we sense and talk about every day, comparing where he was three months ago - even though he was playing - and where he is now, it's all going in one direction,” Kompany said.
The expectation is that Musiala will start on the bench for Bayern’s Champions League second-leg clash with Real Madrid, as the German champions continue to ease him back step by step.
“I can't say anything about tomorrow, but our feeling is that it's going in one direction and we'll one day have the Jamal we all want to see again,” Kompany added.
"We need to stay calm, but it's all a lot better than it was two months ago. But still, he's scoring goals and providing assists. That shows he's mentally grown in his play. He feels better and better and can still perform."
