Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has confirmed that he remains in regular contact with Matteo Guendouzi, and is yet to close a door on a potential reunion with the former Lorient and Olympique de Marseille player. Asked directly about Guendouzi, Le Bris acknowledged the pair remain in touch but refused to expand on any transfer movement. “We still have connections with players, and Matteo is one of those players,” Le Bris said, via Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie. “I worked with him previously in Lorient, so we stay connected. But at the moment it’s too early to speak about the January transfer window.”Guendouzi has previously praised Le Bris’ methods and expressed admiration for the coach’s rapid rise, insisting he was not surprised by the Frenchman’s success since arriving in the Premier League. “Honestly, his results at Sunderland don’t surprise me,” Guendouzi said earlier this year. “A year with him is perhaps the equivalent of three with other coaches. You learn a lot about yourself. Without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”Guendouzi made 26 appearances as a youngster at FC Lorient from 2016 to 2018, before moving to Premier League side Arsenal on a permanent deal. He was loaned out to Marseille during the 2021-2022 season, and made 38 appearances before signing permanently for Les Olympiens for two more seasons. He currently plays for Serie A outfit Lazio where he has made 46 appearances and scored twice for the Capital side. GFFN | George Boxall
